Public Space YAAM-Club
YAAM-Club, Berlin

In 1995 the open-air club »Yaam« occupied an abandoned industrial site, opposite of the eastern harbour, at the river Spree in Berlin- Treptow.
This appropriation of city- space made a former non-accessible area available to the public. The »Yaam« is a non-profit organisation, with 25- 35 active and passive members, which does not receive any financial aid by the government.
The open- air site, clearly marked by industrial buildings and the riverbank, is at the same time dance floor, bar, play- and sports-ground, skate-scape, beach, market, kindergarten and public kitchen. The club opens on Sunday afternoon in spring, summer and autumn. On each open day it attracts up to 2000 people, of every age and many different cultures. In 1996, we started with a survey of the site, talked to the fire brigade, various building and environmental engineers and civil servants. We had to restructure certain parts of the Yaam and finally received the permission to build and use the site as a club and public space. Finally the Yaam became a legal institution in the city.
